VFL: Coburg's woes continue

on . Posted in Blog

Essendon have continued Coburg's dismal start to the season with a thumping 89-point win in round six of VFL action from Piranha Park. After an even first half the Bombers put on a procession in the second booting 17 goals to four winning 22.18.150 to 9.7.61.

Tom Bellchambers (above) had a day out for the Bombers kicking a game-high six goals with 23 disposals while Ben Howlett (32) and Kyle Langford (35) and two goals figured prominently to be in their side's best.

The match was played for the Strathmore Community North West Cup and it was the home side that began best with four goals to two in the first term. The Lions had a slight wind advantage kicking to the city end and they made sure each contest was fierce with the likes of Ben Allan, Keenan Posar and Ryan Exon in the thick of it.

The Bombers began to find their feet in the second quarter however with Howlett providing plenty of grunt around the middle and Josh Begley booting two first-half goals to see them take a two point lead into the sheds at the main break. The second half would have had Coburg coach Peter German scratching his head as the Bombers continually drove the ball into attack at times to little resistance from the home side.

Bellchambers provided the Coburg defenders with plenty of headaches booting five of his goals in the second half and could well have finished with double figures. Begley finished the game with four and Alex Boyse booted three while Peter McEvoy was a lone hand up forward for Coburg with four.

Better players for the winners included Bellchambers, Langford, Howlett, Mason Redman and Jake Long while for Coburg, Posar (25 disposals), Allan, Exon and McEvoy all tried hard. The win moves the Bombers into the top eight and they face Richmond away next round while Coburg have a week off with the state game next week before hosting the Casey Demons, the Lions still searching for their first win of the year.
